While it’s true that Haber was unable to see his vision come to fruition, one could argue that the reason Haber did not achieve his goal was not because it is impossible for someone to accomplish it, but simply because the way that he went about it was wrong. Haber himself attempts to assert this when he infers that â€Å"Orr’s irresponsibility was the cause of the death of many innocent people† (Le Guin 118). In this, Haber creates doubt by blaming Orr for what has happened, which leads readers to an important consideration. Is Haber creating chaos in his attempts to harness Orr’s powers for good, or is Orr creating chaos by resisting Haber’s attempts to use his effective dreaming in a more controlled setting? Le Guin seems to place the blame on Haber, who arrives at the conclusion that â€Å"[h]e had been too protective, too easy on Orr† (118) when Orr tells him about the uncontrolled effective dream that lead to the Alien invasion, and tha t it was ultimately Haber’s own inattentiveness that led to chaos. In fact, when Le Guin, from Haber’s perspective, writes, â€Å"he must face up to what he had done,† (118) she does not make it clear who Haber is referring to. Is he telling us that Orr must own up to being irresponsible enough to have an uncontrolled dream, or that it is he who must face up for allowing Orr the opportunity to do it? The fact that Le Guin leaves this thought up to the reader’s interpretation implies that she is indicting both Orr and Haber for their contributions to the negative outcomes of the dream, however different those contributions might be. When Le Guin writes that Orr believes â€Å"[Haber] sees the world only as a means to his end,† (156) she demonstrates the level of understanding that Orr possesses—he is hesitant not because he knows he could achieve Haber’s goals of bettering the world if he accepted his power, but because he knows that if he tries to do so, it will only result in turmoil. We also see Le Guin highlight Haber’s understanding of the potential for his success or failure in his response to Orr’s assessment of the snakebite analogy. Haber agrees with Orr’s claims that â€Å"[he] do[esn’t] know whether what [he’s] doing is good or evil or both† (Le Guin 140) and asserts that â€Å"[he] do[esn’t] know, about eight-five percent of the time, what the hell [he’s] doing with [Orr’s] screwball brain† but despite this, urges Orr to â€Å"get on with it† (Le Guin 140). But Haber does not want to hear it, and goes on a tirade about his perspectives on the way the world works, arguing, â€Å"’the more things go on moving †¦ the less balance there is—and the more life’† (Le Guin 139). Haber’s point that we must continue to take action in our lives dissents from the assertion that a single person cannot act in everyone’s best interest at the same time. Haber emphasizes his stance that â€Å"life itself is a huge gamble against the odds† and that we â€Å"can’t try to live safely† (Le Guin 139). Perhaps the way that we effect positive change for everyone is to act imperfectly. If we live without taking chances, always opting for the safe choices, we could potentially impede our chances of succeeding in creating a utopia. What Le Guin attempts to make clear, however, is that the circumstances in The Lathe of Heaven are not those of the world we know. Once I finally picked my bad habit I realized how badly I needed to work on it. Huck had a bad habit he needed to work on too. Maybe we didnt know about it or thought we could get rid of it easily. But were either of us going to work it out? In the book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, which we were reading in class, the main character Huck had many bad habits as well. But his one main bad habit was lying to himself and by doing this he broke the law, his moral code and the law of God. It all started after he fakes his own death and runs to an island where he finds a run away slave, Jim that worked for Miss Watson, his guardians sister. Next they leave to find Cairo but as they float down the river they run into many hardships. While this is happening Huck is doing most of his lying to himself. This is very similar to my bad habit because during my month of trying to quit fighting with my mom I went through some very hard times holding back what I wanted to say. This was a very big hardship of mine. So I realized Huck and I had a lot in common. Hucks bad habit was first shown to us in chapter VIII when Huck tells Jim, Well I did. I said I wouldnt, and Ill stick to it. Honest injun I will. He is telling Jim he wont tell anyone that he ran away which means Huck is breaking the law of the land. We knows this because Huck also says People would call me a low sown Ablitionist and despise me for keeping mumà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ but that dont make no difference. Huck again lies for Jim in chapter XVI when he is about to tell the men on the raft that Jim is with him but his conscience comes into play. When this happens he lies to these men and this is just adding more to his bad habit. Also in this chapter Huck breaks his own moral code. When him and Jim miss Cairo he says There warnt anything to say. We both knowed well enough it was more work of the rattle-snake skin; so what was the use to talk about it? This is breaking his own moral code because he didnt believe that a rattlesnake could bring bad luck. Then he broke the law of God in chapter XXXI when he said, You cant pray a lieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ I found that out. This is when Huck realized that he doesnt think what he was doing was wrong. Last in chapter XL Huck realizes that the colors of the skin really dont matter. So at the end Huck breaks through his bad habit. Well my bad habit basically started when my mom started telling me no. And  I just wasnt going to take it. So I started talking back and I wouldnt stop until I got my way or hurt my mom. Which is really something I dont want to do. Thats why I was hoping by trying to break this bad habit I wouldnt have to do it anymore. It started out pretty good I would be ready to fight or say something that might hurt my moms feelings and I would catch myself. It started feeling better right away and my mom even noticed the change. Huck and I were alike because I broke my own moral code by being rude to my mom. I also broke the law of God because in the bible it says honor your father and mother and I dont think what Im doing is considered that. Huck and I were different because Huck no longer had a bad habit and I still do. Well Huck worked his bad habit out and is probably feeling pretty good. However Im still working on mine and I think maybe one day I might be free of this. So Im going to keep on trying a nd if I ever do make it through this I will make sure to tell you. But until that day comes Ill always go for as many candies as I can get.
